File Transfer
Software
One of
the basic functions of any network, be it a simple local area
network (LAN) or the Internet, is to provide users the
capability to share information or data. As such, many file
transfer software have been developed. Four of the more popular
ones are briefly described below.
Microsoft Shared Folders – Undoubtedly the
most familiar file transfer software to you is Microsoft’s file
sharing program. Since it is built into Windows, chances are,
you would have already tried sharing your files with your
colleagues over the office LAN using this
method.
Instant
Messaging File Transfer – Since many people now communicate via
instant messaging programs, file transfer software features are
already integrated in them. Yahoo Messenger for example allows
you to share image files and documents while you chat with
someone.
FTP
clients – Since one of the oldest methods of transferring data
is through FTP, FTP clients are subsequently one of the oldest
file transfer software. These clients are used to access files
that are stored on an FTP server.
P2P
programs – If you’re one of those who frequently download MP3
files, videos, or programs, you should be familiar with this
recurrently controversial type of file transfer software.
Napster and EDonkey2000 (ed2k) are among the programs that
caught the ire of the entertainment industry which eventually
led to their demise. Many programs like them continue to
persist. Among the favorites are Limewire, Bearshare, Shareaza,
and all torrent clients.
